Guide: A date, plus or minus some time2 min read
A date, plus or minus some time
Pick the start date, whether to add or subtract, the amount and the unit: days, business days, weeks, months or years. The answer comes written out with its weekday, and in numbers to copy. It covers a payment due date, the end of a warranty or a return window, an expiry date, a notice period, and any “so many days from now”.
Business days, with holidays
In business days the start date is not counted and every Saturday and Sunday is skipped. Choose the United States and federal holidays come out too — Thanksgiving, Memorial Day and the rest worked out for the year, with the observed day when a fixed holiday falls on a weekend. The page shows how many days it skipped, so the answer can be checked. State and city holidays are not included: add a day for each.
Months are not all the same length
Adding months keeps the day of the month: 15 March plus one month is 15 April. The trouble is the end of a month — 31 January plus one month cannot be 31 February. The rule used is the one contracts and banks use: the last day of the month, 28 February (29 in a leap year), and the page says when it applied. One year after 29 February is 28 February.
The other direction
To count the days between two dates you already have, use days between dates; for an exact age, the age calculator. Everything runs in this tab and works offline.
Frequently asked questions
What date is 90 days from today?
Pick today (it is filled in), leave plus, type 90 and choose days. The answer comes with its weekday, because a deadline landing on a Sunday is usually the thing you need to know next.
How are business days counted?
The start date is not counted, and every Saturday and Sunday is skipped — plus the national holidays of the United States or Brazil if you choose one. So 5 business days from a Friday is the next Friday, or the Monday after if a holiday falls in between.
What is 31 January plus one month?
28 February, or 29 in a leap year. A month keeps the day of the month, and when that day does not exist the last day of the month is used — the convention contracts and banks follow. The page says so when it happens.
Are days and calendar days the same?
Yes: calendar days count every day, weekends and holidays included. Use them for things like return windows and notice periods counted in days; use business days for deadlines that exclude weekends.
Does it handle local holidays?
No. It knows the national holidays of the US and Brazil, moveable ones included. A state or city holiday changes from place to place; add a day for each one that falls in the period.
