There are three different tons
This trips people up constantly, and all three are in the list because all three are in use.
A tonne, or metric ton, is 1,000 kg. A US ton is 2,000 pounds, about 907 kg. A UK ton — the long ton — is 2,240 pounds, about 1,016 kg. The gap between the American and British versions is over ten per cent, which is a great deal of freight.
Stone is not a rounding of anything
Fourteen pounds exactly, and still the normal way to state body weight in Britain and Ireland while being almost unknown elsewhere. A weight given as 12 stone 4 means 12×14 + 4 = 172 pounds.
The converter gives stone as a decimal, so 12.29 stone is that same figure — multiply the fractional part by fourteen to get the pounds.
Mass and weight are not the same thing
Strictly, a kilogram is mass and a pound is force. On the Moon your mass is unchanged and your weight is a sixth of what it was.
In every practical use of this converter that distinction does not matter, because everything is being measured on the same planet. It is worth knowing only if you are doing physics, where the pound-force and the pound-mass are genuinely different quantities.
Nothing is sent anywhere
Every conversion on this page is arithmetic done in your own browser. No request is made, nothing is stored between visits, and the page keeps working with the connection switched off — which is a reasonable way to check the claim.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert stone and pounds to kilograms?
Multiply the stone by fourteen, add the pounds, and convert that total from pounds. 12 stone 4 is 172 pounds, which is 78.0 kg. Entering 12.2857 stone gives the same answer — the decimal is the pounds divided by fourteen.
Which ton does a shipping quote mean?
Usually the metric tonne outside the United States and the short ton inside it, but it is worth confirming rather than assuming: the difference is around ten per cent of the bill. Freight documents often write MT for metric tonne specifically to remove the ambiguity.
Is a troy ounce in here?
No. A troy ounce, used for precious metals, is 31.1 grams against 28.35 for the ordinary avoirdupois ounce, and mixing them silently would be worse than leaving it out. The ounces here are the everyday kind.
Is anything sent anywhere?
No. Everything is worked out in this tab, nothing is transmitted, and the page keeps working offline.
