Why a filled-in form should be flattened
A fillable PDF keeps each answer in a form field floating over the page. It looks finished, but anyone who opens it can click the field and type something else, and some viewers, printers and upload systems do not draw the fields at all — which is how a completed application arrives looking blank. Flattening draws every answer into the page and removes the fields, so the document shows what was filled in, everywhere, and stays that way.
It is the last step before sending a contract, a signed form or anything that should not change after it leaves you. Your original file is not touched: keep it if an answer might need correcting later.
Form fields, or everything
The first option flattens form fields only. Text stays text — you can still select it and search it — and the file stays small. Checkboxes, radio buttons, dropdowns and signature fields are all fixed at whatever they show.
Comments, highlights, drawings and stamps are a different kind of object and are not affected by that. If the document carries them, the page says how many, and the second option freezes them too by redrawing each page as an image at twice screen resolution. The result looks the same and can no longer be edited at all, at the cost of selectable text and a larger file.
Nothing is uploaded
The forms that get flattened are the personal ones: applications, medical and school forms, tax and bank paperwork. The work happens in this tab and the document never leaves your computer. To add a password afterwards, use Protect PDF; to mark it as a copy, add a watermark.

What does flattening a PDF actually do?
A fillable PDF keeps its answers in form fields that sit on top of the page, and anyone with a PDF reader can change them. Flattening draws each field's current value into the page itself and removes the field, so the document shows exactly what was filled in and nothing can be typed over it.
Why did my filled-in form show up blank somewhere else?
Some viewers, printers and phone apps do not draw form fields at all, or draw them without the values. A flattened copy has no fields left to skip: the answers are part of the page, so they print and preview the same everywhere. It is the usual fix before sending a form to a system that says it is empty.
What is the difference between the two options?
Form fields keeps the text as text: selectable, searchable, and the file stays about the same size. Everything, as image also fixes comments, highlights, drawings and stamps, by redrawing each page as a picture — useful for a marked-up document you want frozen, at the cost of selectable text and a larger file.
Can I undo it?
Not in the flattened copy — that is the point. Your original file is untouched, so keep it if you may need to change an answer later.
