Record, listen, save
Press Start recording, let the browser use the microphone and speak. A clock shows the time and a bar shows the sound level, so you can see at once that the right microphone is picking you up; you can pause and carry on in the same recording. When you stop, the recording appears with its waveform and plays in the preview before anything is saved.
The handles on the waveform cut the second of silence at the start and the click of the stop button at the end. Save as MP3 to send to anyone, M4A for a smaller file with the same sound, or WAV to open in an editor.
Volume, format and what comes next
The browser records Opus inside WebM — or AAC on Safari — which many apps will not open, so saving always converts. Even out the volume brings a quiet or uneven recording up to the level of a podcast without clipping the loud parts, which fixes most lectures and meetings recorded from across a room.
To join several recordings into one file, use merge audio; to change the format of an older recording, the audio converter.

The recording is held in this tab's memory and the conversion is done by ffmpeg running right here. Nothing leaves your device — not while you record and not when you save — and the browser asks for the microphone every time you press record.

Is my recording uploaded anywhere?
No. The browser records into this tab's memory and the conversion to MP3 runs here too. Nothing is sent while you record or when you save; closing the tab throws the recording away, so save it first.
Why does the browser ask for the microphone?
Because a page cannot listen without your say-so. The question appears when you press record, not when the page opens. If you refused by mistake, click the microphone or lock icon in the address bar, allow it for this site and press record again.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone. Keep the screen on while recording: a phone that locks can pause the tab, and what was recorded until then is kept.
Is there a time limit?
No limit is set. The recording is held in memory, about 1 MB for every minute, so an hour is easy on a laptop. For very long sessions on a phone, record in parts and join them with Merge Audio.
My recording is too quiet. What can I do?
Turn on Even out the volume before saving. It brings the whole recording up to the loudness of a podcast and keeps the loud parts from clipping. Speaking a hand's width from the microphone helps more than any setting.
